Obituary

Arthur Francis Hourihan III, passed away peacefully at his parents' home on November 2, 2019 at the age of 58 years.

Arthur was born July 4, 1961 in Hartford, Connecticut, the oldest son of Arthur and Arline (Everin) Hourihan.  He attended public schools in Newington, Connecticut prior to graduating from Central Connecticut State University with a degree in Environmental Science.  His interest in the outdoors led him to follow a life close to nature.

Arthur spent a good portion of his life as a commercial fisherman in Seattle, Washington, and Seward and Anchorage, Alaska.  After his fishing career, he became a licensed Alaskan electrician, which had him live in several remote areas in Alaska.  He had a home in Seward and he also resided in Anchorage and Noatak, Alaska.

Arthur was a kind person who cared deeply for others.  His actions throughout his life were a testament of his altruistic side.  He was extremely bright and had a lifelong interest in learning coupled with a quest for knowledge.  His love of the outdoors carried him to Alaska, where he met and married the love of his life – Victoria Nellie Onalik of Noatak, Alaska.  They spent their 15 plus years together in several locations in Alaska.  The people of Victoria's home village of Noatak embraced and loved Arthur as one of their own and considered him a brother.  He was truly loved by all who knew him.

Arthur loved the arts and music, especially "The Grateful Dead" and never missed a show or even individual band members on tour.  Reading the Sunday New York Times cover to cover with several cups of good coffee and riding his bike in all places he dropped his duffel bag were his simple joys.  Arthur enjoyed travelling and taking road trips, both long and short, to see new or familiar places.  He shared this passion for road trips with his mother and stepson in the final months of his life.

He was proceeded in death by his beloved wife Victoria, who passed away in October 2017 with Arthur at her side after a courageous battle with cancer.  Arthur was also proceeded in death by his father, Arthur Francis Hourihan Jr.  He is survived by his mother, Arline Everin Hourihan.

Arthur leaves behind his mother-in-law, Hannah Onalik, his stepson, Harry Hank Onalik, his brother-in-laws Phillip and George Onalik and his sister-in-law Georgia Onalik of Noatak, Alaska.  Arthur also leaves behind his sister Ann and his brothers James, Brian and David Hourihan, his sister-in-laws Kari, Elizabeth and Dianne Hourihan, his nieces and nephews Conner, Madison, David, Erin, Liam, Adia and Rori Hourihan, and numerous friends.
