Brother G. Peter Collins, M.S., a member of the Missionaries of Our Lady of La Salette, Province of Mary, Mother of the Americas, died Sunday, October 14, 2012 at Hartford Hospital. Brother Peter was born on June 29, 1939 in East Chicago, Indiana, son of the late Walter and Vera (Churchill) Collins. After attending schools in Indiana, Massachusetts and Pennsylvania he began his postulancy at the La Salette Seminary, Altamont, New York, on September 17, 1956. He entered the La Salette Novitiate in Bloomfield, Connecticut, on July 1, 1957, took first vows there on July 2, 1958, and made perpetual profession on May 1, 1964 at the La Salette Seminary in Ipswich, Massachusetts. In 1964 Brother Peter was assigned to the La Salette General House in Rome, Italy, where he thrived in his secretarial duties for four years. When he returned to the States, he was appointed Provincial Secretary and Archivist. In addition to these duties he served as Director of Vocations to the Brotherhood. He continued to serve as Provincial Secretary until 1978 when he was asked to assist in the opening of a new parish, St. Ann, in Marietta, Georgia. He ministered there as pastoral associate. Over the years, Brother Peter's grasp of knowledge, his insights, administrative abilities and organizational skills served the La Salette Community and the Church well. He was appointed to the Marriage Tribunal in the Archdiocese of Atlanta, was Financial Administrator for the Sister of Notre Dame de Namur in Connecticut and Boston, and was elected Vice President of the National Religious Brothers Association, a role he enjoyed on both the national and international levels. His La Salette confreres elected him on many occasions to represent them at Congregational and Provincial meetings and chapters. He served the La Salette Community as Provincial Treasurer and made a great contribution to the life of the elderly as Provincial Vicar for Senior Religious. In recent years he has been in residence at Hartford House and has served as First House Councillor for the Hartford House Community. In addition to his La Salette confreres, Brother Peter is survived by his sister-in-law, Mrs. Beatrice Collins of Spring Hill, Florida, and many nieces, nephews and friends. He was predeceased by his brothers Walter, Norman and Paul.
