Obituary

Catherine Ann Mazalas passed away peacefully at home on January 4, 2021 with family and friends by her side.  Cathy was born in Hartford on January 2, 1944.  She was a graduate of Harford Public High School and the University of Hartford Arts and Sciences.  Upon graduation, Cathy took a job with the City of Hartford in the Social Services Department, and ultimately worked her way up to a supervisory position before retiring with 30 years of service.

Unable to be idle, Cathy then took a position with the City of Meriden Social Services Department for several years before retiring a second time.

Still unhappy in retirement, she went to work for the South Park Inn Emergency Shelter in Hartford as an Employment Specialist and remained there for several more years serving numerous clients with great compassion and dedication.   She truly was born to be a social worker and loved seeing people start new lives and enjoy independence.

Cathy was a lifelong member of the Sacred Heart Church of Wethersfield.  She was a very active member of the church choir, the St. Theresa's Women's Guild and she served as co-chair of the Social Action Committee for many years.

Cathy enjoyed family gatherings, especially hosting her annual Christmas Eve celebrations.  She was a great storyteller and was known for maintaining lifelong friendships.  She will be greatly missed by all who were blessed to know her.

Cathy was predeceased by her parents Anna (Killian) and Stanley Mazalas.  Cathy leaves behind first cousins; Debra and her husband Albert LaPlant of Florida, Gary Pilczak, and Glenn Pilczak of Wethersfield; and second cousins Jennifer Bliss, Michelle Bromley, Alex Pilczak and her Goddaughter Cassandra Pilczak.

She also leaves behind very dear friends Mary Lou and Bruce Kramer, and Janet Garrey all of Wethersfield.

The family would also like to acknowledge Cathy's live-in care takers, Claudia Taylor and Evadney Davis both of whom provided exceptional care, joyful companionship and tireless compassion.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Cathy's name to South Park Inn (https://www.southparkinn.org)

Family and friends are invited to her Mass of Christian burial on Saturday, January 9, at 12:00 noon at Christ The King Parish 601 Silas Deane Hwy Wethersfield CT 06109.    The burial will be private.
