Obituary

Charles "Charlie" Nicholas Varunes, 83, of West Hartford died December 5, 2015 at Saint Francis Hospital. He was born January 10, 1932 to Nicholas and Eleni Varunes in Kaminia, Greece. He is survived by and deeply missed by his loving wife Angeliki, his children Elaina, Anita and Nicko, and his grandchildren Stratis and Socrates Varunes and Lukas Papadimitrakopoulos, and his beloved sister Angelica Verses of Stamford, Connecticut. He embraced his son-in-law Fotios Papadimitrakopoulos and daughter-in-law DeAnn Varunes as part of his family. He left with cherished memories of his mother and father and his childhood in Greece. He moved to Stamford, Connecticut with his parents and sister immediately after World War II. He served in the United States Army from 1952 -1954. He was immensely proud of being able to serve his country. He began his long career in the hospitality business soon after his service. In 1957 he moved to West Hartford, Connecticut. He married his loving wife in 1959 and started a family. "Charlie" spent 45 years being a friendly face to thousands of visitors to the Hartford Hilton Hotel, where his overwhelmingly hospitable nature cheered numerous VIPs, politicians and dignitaries. He also brought smiles to the faces of friends and neighbors through his love of gardening, planting hundreds of bright flowers every year so that his family home would be a bright and beautiful place for his family and all those who passed by the house. His love of children shone through when he spent time with his numerous godchildren of whom he was very proud and happy to watch grow through the years. When his grandchildren were born he was overwhelmed with joy and at times he could not express his happiness but his beaming smile when he played with them said everything. He will be missed and always in our hearts. Family and friends are invited to show their respects between 4:00 pm and 8:00 pm on Wednesday, December 9, 2015 at Dillon-Baxter Funeral Home, 1276 Berlin Turnpike, Wethersfield, Connecticut. Funeral services will take place at 10:30 am Thursday, December 10, 2015 at Saint George Greek Orthodox Cathedral, 433 Fairfield Ave, Hartford with internment immediately afterward at Cedar Hill Cemetery.
