Conrad
Cormier
Jan 22, 1929 — Aug 28, 2022
Farmington
Conrad Cormier, 93 (1929-2022) of Farmington CT, formerly of East Hartford CT, died peacefully of natural causes on Sunday August 28, 2022 at John Dempsey Hospital. He is predeceased by his beloved wife Virginia Cormier nee Cirilli with whom he renewed wedding vows in 2018 after 72 years of marriage. Conrad is survived by daughter Gail Cormier of Burlington CT, son Robert Cormier & daughter-in-law Tracey Cormier of Pittsburgh PA, and daughter Claire Cormier of Raleigh NC. He was predeceased by son Vincent Cormier of Lebanon CT. To cherish his memory he leaves daughter-in-law Dianne Cormier of Lebanon CT in addition to several grandchildren: Virginia Hennessey of Windsor CT, Desiree Cormier and Daniel Cormier both of Lebanon CT, Nicole Musiak and Benjamin Cormier both of Pittsburgh PA, Bryan Cormier Hager of Wake Forest NC, and three great grandchildren, Raeme Hennessey and Joshua and Jordan Musiak.
Conrad was the last living of 14 children born to Louis and Sadie Cormier nee Cyr of Hartford CT. He was born on a farm in Lille Maine and as a young teen moved to Hartford with family members speaking primarily French. With guidance from his brother, Conrad adapted to city life through boxing, training as a youth at a local gym and boxing as "Kid Cormier" in the feather weight classification. He met Virginia while working at Royal Typewriter in Hartford and after marrying Virginia he drove a taxi to pay his way through barber school. Conrad was a dedicated family man and was always at hand to help his friends as needs arose. He began work as a barber on Park Street in Hartford before opening his own barber shop at Hartford Hospital Medical Center where for over 50 years he was known as "Connie the Barber." He regularly provided haircuts to patients who were ill or too impaired to leave their hospital rooms and developed longstanding close relationships with those who worked there. Connie never went to "work" as most of us know it. He loved his vocation and the customers and long-time friends who delighted in his enthusiasm for life and readily bet haircuts on ballgames and politics. Connie playfully taunted customers into contributing to his "Cuss Pot" whereby people would pay into the pot each time they used profanity—and he was crafty about eliciting profanities for the benefit of local charities. His greatest joy in life stemmed from being a caring, fun, and wonderful uncle to his many nieces, nephews, and grandchildren who for years enjoyed special time with him during haircuts as they grew.
For decades Connie was an active member and leader in the Knights of Columbus in Glastonbury CT. For his service, Connie was honored with the position of Grand Knight and an Honorary 4 th Degree Lifetime Membership. He loved playing cards, golf, and shooting pool with lifelong friends and new and younger members, calling BINGO, facilitating special events, and helping wherever needs arose.
