Obituary

David Kovacs of Hartford passed away Tuesday after a brief illness. Born in South Bend, Indiana David has been a longtime resident and active member of the greater Hartford community.
A graduate of Notre Dame University with a double major in French and Russian, David received advanced academic degrees and training from the University of Hartford. He earned his Masters of Education in Special Education and Advanced Training in Psychology.

David was a devoted Special Education Teacher at New Britain High School from 1980 until his retirement in 2010. He was proud of his students and dedicated to their personal growth and education. Mr. Kovacs was their Debate Coach, Philosophy Club Faculty Advisor and Breakdancing Advisor. Additionally, he served as the Recording Secretary for the New Britain Federation of Teachers (NBFT), AFL-CIO, Local 871, and Chaired the Class Size Negotiating Committee, representing NBFT in negotiations with the New Britain Board of Education.

David was a tireless community activist with a long record of community service. He was a Founder, President, Board member and long-time supporter of AIDS Project Hartford. His history of community service includes: Democratic Town Committee, Southend Community Services, South Hartford Initiative (SHI), Hartford Redevelopment Agency, The Children's Endowment Fund and an original organizer of the now infamous Hartford "Hooker Day Parade".

He was most proud of his successes as Campaign Manager for "Mayor Mike" Peters and State Representative Art Feltman. His 10 year membership with the Masons Washington Lodge #70 AF and AM Windsor, CT brought him great personal satisfaction.

David was an animal lover with a particular affinity for Doberman Pinschers; providing shelter, support and love to several mature Dobermans, the hardest to place and the most needy and grateful of David's unique brand of succor and compassion.
He is survived by his brothers Bruce Kovacsics and Eric Kovacsics and their families. He also leaves behind a legion of students, friends, neighbors and intended-family who have been enriched by his intelligence, wit and passions and who continue his legacy of celebration, community and social activism.
His friends and neighbors offer heartfelt thanks to the folks at Avery Heights in Hartford, for the exceptional care, consideration and comfort he received in these last several months.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the David Roy Kovacs Scholarship Fund, c/o The Community Foundation of Greater New Britain, Inc., 74A Vine Street, New Britain, CT 06052. The David Roy Kovacs Estate has endowed this scholarship for New Britain residents who have graduated from a New Britain area high school with a demonstrated intent to continue their education in a community college, trade or vocational school program.
