George W. Taylor, 92 of Wethersfield, beloved husband of Margaret (Murray) Taylor, died, Monday, December 10, 2012 with his family at his side.
George was a born entrepreneur. As a youngster in grammar school, he
sold candy and soda from a wagon to the baseball fans at Stillman
Field in Wethersfield near his family home. In high school he developed a lifelong interest in movies and worked as an usher and projectionist at several movie theaters in the heyday
of the Hartford movie houses, including Loew's and The Allyn. By 1938
he had his own business selling film equipment and providing movie
projection services to educational and church groups. In 1942 he enlisted in the Army Air Corps and trained to become an airplane mechanic. He achieved the rank of Staff Sergeant, and was in charge of a crew that maintained bomber aircraft at the base in
Trinidad where he was stationed during WWII. In September 1945, he
married Peg, whom he met before the War at Colt's Firearms. After the
War, they settled in Wethersfield and continued the business George
had started, operating at first out of the basement of his parents'
home. George and Peg ran Taylor Films, branching out the business to
include selling antiques, until their retirement. They created many
fond memories delivering rental films, in that pre-VCR era, to the
resorts of the "Connecticut Catskills," and movie nights on the
beaches along the Connecticut shore. For a time they operated their
own movie theater in Rockville. For a number of years George was an
active member of Trinity Episcopal Church, serving as an usher and as
parish treasurer. In retirement, he enjoyed building model trains,
restoring their Victorian home on Main Street in Old Wethersfield, and
reminiscing about the good old days of Hollywood with Peg, watching
classic movies on television. Besides his wife, he is survived by two daughters, Maureen E. McCurda of Wethersfield and Elizabeth P.
