Hartford
Irene T. Skevas, 95, of Hartford, CT, beloved wife of the late Peter K. Skevas, passed away peacefully Monday, October 12, 2026.
Irene was born in Agiassos, Greece and was the daughter of the late Stiliano and Eleni (Kalontzoglu) Tzinnis. Irene will be forever missed by her children, Eleni Skevas and her partner Michael Wright; Maria Karapanos and her husband Peter; Constantinos Skevas and his wife Lori; her cherished grandchildren, Charlie, Pari, Peter, Alicia, Christina, Dimitri, Carly and Peter and her sixteen great-grandchildren, aged 15 to 1.
Irene lived through famine, the Nazi occupation of her village, and the Greek Civil War. After marrying in 1948, Irene emigrated from Greece to start her life with Peter. They settled in Hartford, CT where they raised their three children. Together they instilled values of love for family, hard work, and education. Irene was grateful that her children were born and raised here.
Irene worked for Pratt & Whitney Aircraft in Rocky Hill and East Hartford. She was beloved by her co-workers and respected for her meticulous skills as a blueprint reader and plater in Department 161.
Despite completing only the third grade, Irene was proud that all her children and grandchildren completed college. She was lovingly known to her grandchildren, neighbors, many friends as "Yiayia".
An expert at crocheting and knitting, Irene also enjoyed her houseplants, adored her cats, and cherished spending time with her family. She expressed herself through poetry often reflecting back on life in Greece and the challenges she and other Greeks faced.
A special thank you to the staff at the Jefferson House as well as friends Julia Carmona and her brother Babu.
