Obituary

Isis Adela Alzugaray, beloved sister, aunt, great-aunt, godmother, and cherished friend, passed away at the age of 89 on Thursday, January 15, 2026. Born on October 19, 1936, in Perico, Matanzas, Cuba, Isis was the daughter of Juan F. Alzugaray and Alicia M. (Díaz) Alzugaray. In 1961, she came to the United States, where she built a life marked by dedication, resilience, and a deep love for family and friends. Isis began her career in Cuba as a teacher and once arriving in Connecticut she began at Travelers, later working alongside her brother at The Specialty Shop. In the early 1970s, she opened The Children's Palace, a reflection of her joy and creativity. She eventually closed the store to devote herself fully to caring for her great-nieces and the many children she lovingly raised and nurtured as her own through years of caregiving. Isis later retired after working in the Simsbury School System, where her warmth and kindness touched countless lives. Isis's greatest joy and proudest achievement was the love she gave—especially to the children she helped raise and care for throughout her life. Known as "Tía" to many who loved her dearly, she was defined by her love of life, heart of gold, strength, kindness, sociable spirit, and unwavering devotion to family and friends. Her impact was profound, and she will be deeply missed by all whose lives she touched.

Isis is survived by her brother, Humberto Alzugaray (Robert Garrie) of New York City, NY; her sister-in-law, Clotilde Nereida (Melcon) Chavez of Rocky Hill, CT; her beloved niece and devoted caregiver, Alicia M. Rosario (Victor) of Rocky Hill, CT; and her nieces and nephews: Alice Rodrigues (Manuel) of Miami; Juan Carlos Alzugaray of Spain; Ana Alzugaray of New York City, NY; Hector Alzugaray (Lucy) of Rocky Hill, CT; Alejandro Alzugaray (Ailed) of Miami, FL; and Isis Alzugaray of Fort Myers, FL. She is lovingly remembered by her great-nieces, great-nephews, and the many special people she helped raise, including Melissa (Rosario) Mecham (Ryan), Lauren (Rosario) Murphy (Patrick), Manuel Rodrigues (Carley), Steven Rodrigues, Bryan Rodrigues, Alyssa Alzugaray, Nicholas Alzugaray, Kelly Padilla, Anabel Padilla, Eric Padilla, Jessica Zarza, Amaya Alzugaray, and Alejandro Alzugaray. She is also fondly remembered by her godson, David Carrera (Aidith); Elise (Meltzer) Kliman (Joseph); Emily (Meltzer) Hearne (Christopher); her numerous great-great-nieces and nephews; and many friends who were like family to her.

Isis was predeceased by her parents, Juan F. Alzugaray and Alicia M. (Díaz) Alzugaray; her brothers Juan F. Alzugaray, Carlos Alzugaray, and Hector Alzugaray; her sister-in-law Nery (Acosta) Alzugaray; brother-in-law Allan Wiederspiel; and her nephew Carlos Juan Alzugaray.

The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the staff at Maple View Manor for their years of compassionate care and support provided to Isis. She will be cherished always and remembered forever.
