Obituary

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of John I. Mougias, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and brother, on Sunday, March 24, 2024, at age 68.  He passed away peacefully at home, from a difficult and courageous battle with cancer, surrounded by his family.  John was born in Aigion, Achaias, Greece, and was the son of the late George and Anna (Hantzaris) Mougias.

In Greece John served in the National Airforce, later becoming a professional handler of heavy construction equipment locally, drove 18-wheelers initially, then on to tour buses traveling all across Europe.  He immigrated to the U.S. in 1985 and joined the family restaurant business expanding his talents in the kitchen. He found great passion in the art of cuisine.

John is survived by his loving wife Roula (Andronis) Mougias, his twin daughters Anna (Omar) Ahmad, and Anastasia (John) Kyprillis, cherished granddaughter Alexandra, all of Wethersfield and sister, Anna Mougias of Greece.  He was predeceased by his brother Konstantinos.

John was a Nascar enthusiast, enjoyed traveling, gardening, visiting with friends, and most of all spending time with all his girls.  His larger-than-life personality will be missed by many.

The funeral service will be held on Thursday, March 28, 2024 at 11:00 AM at St. George Greek Orthodox Cathedral, 433 Fairfield Avenue, Hartford, CT, with the Reverend Dr. George Zugravu officiating.  Visiting hours will be held prior to the service, beginning at 10:00 AM.  Burial will be private.  In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. George Greek Orthodox Cathedral in John's memory.
