Obituary

Jose I. Montalvo, 86 of Hartford, beloved husband of Edith (Martinez) Montalvo, passed away Saturday, October 16, 2021 at St. Francis Hospital. He was born in San German, Puerto Rico, son of the late Francisco and Dominga (Irizarry) Montalvo, and immigrated to Hartford in 1955. Prior to his retirement, Jose worked for Colt's Manufacturing for 31 years. He was a communicant of Sacred Heart and St. Lawrence O'Toole Church, Hartford for many years.

Jose had a number of accomplishments during his lifetime.  Jose was severely hard of hearing, was primarily Spanish speaking and had a limited education in a foreign country.  Despite these challenges, he was able to attain and maintain steady employment, secure and purchase a home and successfully raise a family in CT.  Jose was a self-taught carpenter, who enjoyed gardening, traveling, traditional Puerto Rican music, playing dominoes and family gatherings. He was an active member in his church community and was proud to have completed his "Cursillo". His laughter and voice could be heard far and near and many in the community have funny stories of his contagious joy and kindness.  A humble man.  He was loved by many.

Besides his wife Edith, Jose is survived by his son, Jose Montalvo, Jr. of Hartford, and his daughter, Milagros Montalvo-Stewart, and her husband Ryan, of Newington. He leaves his brother Francisco Montalvo of Newington, and his 2 sisters; Irene Rodriguez of West Hartford, and Haydee Feliciano of Hartford, his 4 grandchildren; Damon Stewart,  Makai Stewart, Khalil Stewart and Tais Montalvo. He was predeceased by his 4 brothers; Fabian, Jorge, Bienvenido, and Valero Montalvo, and a sister, Vidalina Montalvo. Jose also leaves many nieces, nephews, grand nieces, and grand nephews.
