Josephine
Mavromatis
Jun 24, 1935 — Sep 10, 2022
West Hartford
Josephine S. (Lobasz) Mavromatis, 87, of West Hartford, died peacefully Saturday, September 10, 2022, at Hospital of Central Connecticut, New Britain. She was the beloved wife of the late Demetrious A. Mavromatis. Josephine was born in New Haven to the late Joseph and Jane (Wolosz) Lobasz. She received her BA in 1958 from the University of Connecticut and,
shortly after graduation, worked as a civilian for the US Military in South Korea. After returning to the United States and working in New York City, Josephine worked for the International Center of Worcester in MA, hosted by Clark University. The International Center brought community, local businesses, and students from other countries together, forging understanding, respect, and mutually beneficial relationships across cultures. The Center not only fulfilled her love of people of all cultures, it was here where she met the love of her life, Demetrious, who was an international student from Greece. They moved to Connecticut where, in 1969, she accepted a position at University of Connecticut International Public Service Division (formerly Development Administrators Training Program—DATP), located in Hartford. Here, she was able to continue her vast cross-cultural experience as a Cultural Coordinator and was later promoted to Training Coordinator. Upon receiving her Master of Science in Organizational Behavior in 1975 from the University of Hartford, she became an Associate Extension Professor until retirement. During her career, she published various articles in professional journals. Josephine traveled yearly with Demetrious to Greece and other European countries, where she spent time swimming, enjoying the local cuisine, and spending time with family. Besides being a wonderfully loving sister, aunt, and great-aunt, one of her greatest legacies was her ability to connect with a diverse group of people who, more often than not, became lifelong friends here and abroad. Her humor, kindness, and generosity will be sorely missed by all.
Josephine is survived by sisters-in-law, Jo-Ann Lobasz of Southington, and Filio Mavromatis of Athens, Greece; nephews Michael Lobasz of Wallingford, George Deligiannis (Maria) of London, and Thanassis Deligiannis (Katerina) of Athens, Greece; nieces Kristen Touma (Guy) and Karen Lobasz of Southington, and Annamaria Mavromatis of Athens, Greece; grandnephews and grandnieces Jacek and Camden Lobasz; Matthew, Nicholas, Nathan, and Kayleigh Touma; Kimon, Padelis, Anna-Maria, Christina, and Norma Deligiannis; and Dimitris and Giannis Mavromatis. Besides her husband, Demetrious, Josephine was predeceased by brothers David and Raymond Lobasz. Josephine also leaves behind many loving friends, among them, Rosemary Martocchio of Ellington, Michael Monroe of Arlington, VA, and Adilia Janeiro of West Hartford.
