Obituary

Marianne Therese (Foster) Cosgrove, 86, of Wethersfield, beloved wife for 60 years of the late Richard M. Cosgrove, Sr., died Thursday, October 31, 2013 at the Arden Courts Assisted Living Center in Farmington, Connecticut, surrounded by her family. She was born in Woburn, Massachusetts, the daughter of the late George H. Foster and Eileen (Doherty) Foster. She was the retired Assistant Director/Head Nurse of the Bloomfield Convalescent Home in Bloomfield, Connecticut. She graduated from Woburn High School in 1945 and attended Boston University and the School of Nursing at Massachusetts General Hospital from which she graduated in 1949, a fact which was a source of great pride for her. While a student, she served as a Cadet Nurse during World War 2. Following her graduation, she served as the Head Nurse of the Neurology Unit at Mass General. While serving in this capacity she met Richard Cosgrove, a Boston College Law School student and U.S. Marine whom she married in 1950. Moving to Hartford in 1952, they proceeded to raise six children and welcomed into this world 13 grandchildren and one great grandchild, all of whom they adored. "Gram" liked to pretend that she was a "toughie" with her grandchildren, but usually proved to be no match for their smiles and pleas. In addition to her position at the Bloomfield Convalescent Hospital and her many responsibilities in raising a large and active family, she was a member of the Ladies Club of the Cathedral of St. Joseph, the Parents Board at Northwest Catholic High School and the Ladies Club of the Church of the Incarnation. She also served as a volunteer librarian at the Cathedral of St. Joseph School for many years. She was a devout communicant of the Cathedral of St. Joseph and later the Church of the Incarnation and was rarely encountered without her rosary beads, which she utilized daily. She is survived by six children and their spouses, Richard M. Cosgrove, Jr. and Janet of West Hartford, Dr. Ellen (Cosgrove) Czajka of Athens, N.Y., Atty. Patrick A. Cosgrove and Maureen of Glastonbury, Mary (Cosgrove) Allard and Larry of Acton, MA., Robert K. Cosgrove and Jennifer Charbonnier of Southington, and James H. Cosgrove and Elisa of Newington, a brother and sister-in-law, George and Mary Foster of Naples, FLA., a sister, Virginia Doherty of Woburn, MA., grandchildren, Michael Cosgrove, Elizabeth (Cosgrove) Cronin and her husband, Matt, Christopher, Nicholas and Timothy Czajka, Alexandra, Nora and Victoria Cosgrove, Margaret and Catherine Allard, Allison and Alana Cosgrove, Steven Cosgrove, Holly and Whitney Shail, a great granddaughter, Kailyn Cronin, who brought her much joy over the last several months, and a large number of loving nieces and nephews. She was also predeceased by a son, George Cosgrove. The funeral will be Tuesday, November 5, 2013 at 10:00 a.m. from the Dillon-Baxter Funeral Home, 1276 Berlin Tpke., Wethersfield, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 a.m. in the Church of the Incarnation, 544 Prospect St., Wethersfield. Burial will be in Mount Saint Benedict Cemetery, Bloomfield. The family will receive relatives and friends Monday from 5-8 p.m. at the funeral home.
