Obituary

Nellie U. Romaine, 92, of Bloomfield, formerly of Wethersfield and Hartford, CT entered into eternal rest on Thursday, October 3, 2024. She was the beloved wife of the late Stephen G. Romaine with whom she shared over 43 years of marriage. Born in Hartford on July 24, 1932, she was the youngest of five daughters of the late Salvatore and Josephine (Bordonaro) Uccello.

Educated in the Hartford public schools, she graduated from Weaver High School as valedictorian of the class of 1950. She received a Bachelor of Arts degree with honors from Saint Joseph College (now the University of St Joseph), a Master of Arts degree in English from Trinity College in Hartford  and a Master of Science degree in Library Science from Simmons College (now Simmons University) in Boston. She was inducted into Beta Phi Mu, the international honor society of librarians and information specialists.  She started her professional career teaching English and Latin at Ellsworth Memorial High School in South Windsor where she met her husband Steve. She subsequently was librarian for the Connecticut Justice Commission and ended her career as librarian at Griswold Junior High School in Rocky Hill. For many years she was active in the Alumnae Association of St Joseph College, serving as president of the Alumnae Association and as a member of the Board of Trustees of the College. She was a corporator of the Hartford Public Library. She shared a love of opera, art and theater with Steve, and together they enjoyed traveling, and taking day trips throughout the northeast.

While living in Wethersfield, she was a daily communicant of the Church of the Incarnation. In 2017 she moved to Duncaster in Bloomfield.  She enjoyed life in this very special retirement community.  She made new friends and took part in many activities there. She was generous to her family and to the causes that were dear to her.

Nellie is survived by her devoted and loving nephew, David J. Gustafson and his wife Jacqueline (Bisson) of West Hartford, her niece, Laura A. (Gustafson) Sweeney and her companion William Grant of Simsbury, her grandnephew, James R. Sweeney of Westminster, CO and her grandniece Alison M. Bell and her husband Christian of Oakland, FL. She also leaves her devoted caregiver Haddy Mbye, who provided exceptional care to Nellie over the last few years. Besides her parents and husband she was predeceased by her sisters, Vincenza A. Uccello, Antonina P. Uccello, Carmela M. Gustafson, Virgilia U. Martini, and her brothers-in-law, Russell E. Gustafson and Alfred V. Martini.
