Obituary

Peter Sarantos Dizes, 84, of Berlin, CT, passed away on Thursday, April 18, 2024. He was born on July 5, 1939 in the small village of Amikles, Sparti, Greece.  At the age of 18 he immigrated first to Toronto, Canada, to seek a better future until love brought him to Hartford, CT.  In 1964 he married Irene Glynos, and settled in Wethersfield, CT where they raised their three children. Initially, Peter worked a couple of years at Pratt & Whitney until he decided to pursue the restaurant business. He first owned Paradise Pizza in Waterbury, CT, and then Pizza Barn in Newington, CT. With the purchase of 10 acres of land In 1984, the family moved to Berlin for him to grow his enormous garden and keep his sheep and goats. He was equally proud of his Greek heritage and American citizenship, deeply patriotic and a "student of the Constitution" heralding the birthplace of democracy from where he was born to his adopted United States and never missed a vote. Upon retiring, he was able to pursue his interests and passions by visiting people in local retirement communities, providing interpreter services throughout the state and volunteering with the Berlin Republican Party.  He was a fan of the Maple Leafs and Hartford Whalers and went to every soccer, baseball, football, basketball and lacrosse game to cheer on his grandchildren. He loved people and would remember a face and the person's whole life story in great detail. Wherever he went, he always managed to make a connection with someone who knew someone he had crossed paths with previously. He was known in equal measure for a smile that lit up his face and a twinkle in his eye along with his long-winded stories and strong opinions.

He will be sadly missed by his wife of 52 years, Irene, daughter Georgia, and her husband Rockwell Spalding of Rocky Hill, CT, daughter Kristina, and her husband Ron Beasley of Wethersfield, CT, son Sandor Dizes of Windsor Locks, CT, and his beloved grandchildren Rockwell and Grayson Spalding, Kyle and Luke Beasley and Carter, Alexandra and Olivia Dizes.

A funeral service will be held at St. George Greek Orthodox Cathedral, on Thursday, April 25th at 11:00 am, 433 Fairfield Avenue, Hartford. Burial will be private for the family at Rose Hill Cemetery in Rocky Hill.
